Regional TV broadcasts to all parts of Australia outside the five mainland capital cities, reaching over 8 million people. The regional TV population is a diverse mixture of city, town and coastal dwellers as well as rural and outback Australians.
In the east coast regional markets and Tasmania there are three free to air (FTA) commercial channels, each broadcasting programming sourced from one of the metropolitan TV networks. In Tasmania and the rest of the regional Australia there are two FTA channels, broadcasting various combinations of programming from the three metropolitan networks.
All regional markets have local news and weather bulletins as well as regional content development, advertising and promotion facilities.
Markets
Queensland (AM-A), Northern NSW (AM-B), Southern NSW (AM-C), Victoria (AM-D) and Tasmania (AM-E) are the major regional markets. They are known as aggregated markets as they each comprise smaller local areas, known as “sub-markets” eg. Wollongong, Cairns, Albury etc.
The aggregated markets and Regional WA use ‘peoplemeter’ technology, with full planning and ratings data available in line with Metro market standards.
The regional markets of SA and NT as well as outback areas of QLD and NSW are surveyed using diary research methodology.
